Margit, the Fell Omen is said to be the first wall among the bosses in Elden Ring.
On the other hand, Morgott, the Omen King would be a wall in the middle of the story.
Many people may think that:
Are the appearances and movements of Margit and Morgott alike?
Are they brother?
Why do they want to kill the Tarnished?
In this article, a native Japanese writer explained the lore of Margit and Morgott including Japanese backgrounds.
Morgott
Let’s start with Morgott.
Morgott is Marika and Godfrey’s child.
We can see the parents of Morgott from the 4 texts below.
Enia
…Indeed. But remember one thing. The demigods are each and all the direct offspring of Queen Marika. Godrick the Grafted was but a distant relation… The runt of the litter, his divine blood sorely diluted.
Gideon
There are four more demigods yet to be located. Miquella of the Haligtree, the Unalloyed. His twin, Malenia, the undefeated swordswoman. Lunar Princess Ranni, daughter to Rennala.
Mohg’s Great Rune
Mohg and Morgott are twin brothers, and their Great Runes are naturally similar.
But Mohg‘s rune is soaked in accursed blood, from his devout love for the wretched mire that he was born into far below the earth.
Morgott’s Great Rune
This Great Rune is the anchor ring that houses the base, and proves two things:
That the Omen King was born of the golden lineage, and that he was indeed the Lord of Leyndell.
From Enia’s dialogue, all the demigods except Godrick are Marika‘s direct children.
And, from Gideon‘s dialogue, Mohg the Lord of Blood is demigod and Marika‘s direct children.
And, from the text of Mohg‘s Great Rune, Morgott is Marika‘s direct children too.
Finally, from the text of Mohg‘s Great Rune, Morgott was born of the golden (= Godfrey‘s) lineage, so we can conclude that Morgott is Marika and Godfrey’s child
Omen
Morgott’s early life is described in the text of Remembrance of the Omen King.
Remembrance of the Omen King
Though born one of the graceless Omen, Morgott took it upon himself to become the Erdtree’s protector. He loved not in return, for he was never loved, but nevertheless, love it he did.
From the text of “Though born one of the graceless Omen”, Morgott is an Omen.
Here, there is a question as to what kind of existence the Omen is.
In Japanese translation, Omen (忌み子) represents someone who is disliked by everyone or a symbol of misfortune.
In addition, Omen would be an existence whose blood is cursed in the world view of Elden Ring.
One of the evidence is described in the text of Morgott’s Cursed Sword.
Morgott’s Cursed Sword
Warped blade of shifting hue used by Morgott, the Omen King.
The accused blood that Morgott recanted and sealed away reformed into this blade.
So, we can see Morgott’s blood is cursed.
In addition, Morg, the brother of Morgott, has also the cursed blood, as described in Mohg‘s Great Rune.
Mohg’s Great Rune
Mohg and Morgott are twin brothers, and their Great Runes are naturally similar.
But Mohg‘s rune is soaked in accursed blood, from his devout love for the wretched mire that he was born into far below the earth.
In addition, the fate of the Omen is implied in the text of Regal Omen Bairn.
Regal Omen Bairn
Omen babies born of royalty do not have their horns excised, but instead are kept underground, unbeknownst to anyone, imprisoned for eternity.
These memorial fetishes are fashioned in secret.
So, the Omen is considered dead the moment he is born, and is forever imprisoned underground without anyone knowing.
However, why does Morgott, who should have been imprisoned underground forever, fight the Tarnished on the ground?
Purpose
It is speculated that Morgott has been released to the ground because he has high combat power, as described in the text of Fell Omen Cloak.
Fell Omen Cloak
Having slaughtered countless champions during the Shattering, the Fell Omen has become a horror to those who harbor ambitions for the Erdtree, or for Lordship.
(“the Fell Omen” is Margit and also Morgott.)
So, we can see that Morgott was strong enough to turn back many challengers in the Shattering.
Also, the purpose of Morgott would be to protect the Erdtree, which is also described in the text of Remembrance of the Omen King.
Remembrance of the Omen King
Though born one of the graceless Omen, Morgott took it upon himself to become the Erdtree’s protector. He loved not in return, for he was never loved, but nevertheless, love it he did.
Even though Morgott was not loved by the Erdtree, he protects it with unconditional love, so Morgott may be something of a sad existence…
Morgott and Margit
Morgott and Margit must be the same person, and the reasons are summarized below.
Reasons why Morgott and Margit are the same
1, The appearances of Morgott and Margit are completely same.
2, Margit’s Shackle is also effective to Morgott.
3, The voices of Morgott and Margit are completely same.
4, They often use the word of “flame of ambition”.
5, If you defeat Morgott before Margit, you cannot see Margit forever.
6, The effect when defeating Margit is gold, which represents the thoughtform in Elden Ring.
From these facts, Morgott and Margit must be the same person.
More precisely, Margit would be Morgott’s thoughtform.
In addition, after defeating Margit, he speaks as follows.
Margit
I shall remember thee, Tarnished.
Smouldering with thy meagre flame.
Cower in Fear. Of the Night.
The hands of the Fell Omen shall brook thee no quarter.
And you can fight enemies that look like Margit around the capital.
If this enemies was a thoughtform Morgott created, it fits with what Margit said; “The hands of the Fell Omen shall brook thee no quarter”.
