Lore of Godfrey and Hoarah Loux Explained

蛮地の王、ホーラ・ルー ELDEN RING

At the end of the main story of Elden Ring, players fight Godfrey and Hoarah Loux.

You might have a lot of questions about Godfrey and Hoarah Loux.

“Why is Godfrey the First Elden Lord?”
“Why did Godfrey kill the lion?”
“Why did Godfrey transform into Hoarah Loux?”

In this article, the author, native Japanese, explained the lore of Godfrey and Hoarah Loux, taking the Japanese backgrounds into consideration.

Notes about Godfrey

First, let’s see the notes about Godfrey.

Why Is Godfrey the First Elden Lord?

Players will fight Godfrey in front of the Erdtree.

I thought he was the final boss…

By the way, why is Godfrey called the First Elden Lord?

The reason is simple: he is Queen Marika‘s first husband.

As the word “First” indicates, Marika and Godfrey have parted ways.

Latar, Marika accepted Radagon as the Second Elden Lord.

This article is explaining why Marika shattered the Elden Ring.

Why Did Marika and Godfrey Part Ways?

The reason why Marika banished Godfrey would be to make him stronger.

At first, Godfrey and Marika were working together to pacify the Lands Between.

Hark, brave warriors. Hark, my lord Godfrey. We commend your deeds. Guidance has delivered ye through ordeal to the place ye stand. Put the giants to the sword and confine the flame atop the mount. Let a new epoch begin. An epoch glistening with life. Brandish the Elden Ring, for the Age of the Erdtree!

However, the pacification of the Lands Beatween also meant that Godfrey’s worthy rival would be gone.

The text of Elden Lord Greaves indicates that the absence of worthy enemy faded the eyes of Godfrey and he was robbed the blessing of Erdtree.

Elden Lord Greaves
The age of the Erdtree began amongst conflict, when Godfrey was lord of the battlefield. He led the War against the Giants. Faced the Storm Lord, alone. And then, there came a moment. When his last worthy enemy fell. And it was then, as the story is told, that the hue of Lord Godfrey’s eyes faded.

The person who robbed the blessing from Godfrey was precisely Marika, as described below.

My Lord, and thy warriors. I divest each of thee of thy grace.
With thine eyes dimmed, ye will be driven from the Lands Between. Ye will wage war in a land afar, where ye will live, and die.

Then, after thy death, I will give back what I once claimed.
Return to the Lands Between, wage war, and brandish the Elden Ring.
Grow strong in the face of death. Warriors of my lord. Lord Godfrey.

As a result of this robbing, Godfrey parted ways with Marika and left the Lands Between, which is described in the text of Remembrance of Hoarah Loux.

Remembrance of Hoarah Loux
When Godfrey, first Elden Lord was robbed of his grace, becoming Tarnished, he took with him his kinfolk and left the Lands Between. After the Long March of the Tarnished came to an end, Godfrey divested himself of kingship, becoming a simple warrior once more.

Here, you might think why Marika banished Godfrey.

In my thought, Godfrey might be an insurance in case none can rule the Lands Between.

What Marika said above implies she anticipated that Godfrey would return to the Lands Between after he died in badlands.

In other words, Marika wanted Godfrey to become the Elden Lord again when none can rule the Lands Between, such as the case the Elden Ring was shattered.

In summary, Marika would have banished Godfrey to make him stronger in case he returned to Lands Between, which none can rule, in order to become an Elden Lord.

Pattern of His Children Names

As a side note, the children between Marika and Godfrey have letter G in their name, such as Godwyn, Morgott, and Mohg.

In addition, the children between Marika and Radagon, Miquella and Malenia, have letter M and that between Radagon and Rennala, Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard, have R in their name.

Miquella and Malenia

Notes about Hoarah Loux

Next, let’s think about Hoarah Loux.

Hoarah Loux would be the Godfrey’s other name as a warrior.

In addition, Hoarah Loux became the chieftain of the badlands.

So, after leaving the Lands Between, Godfrey devoted himself to fighting as Hoarah Loux, and eventually became the strongest there.

Godfrey became the lords twice with just his pure martial power, which indicates that his incredible strength.

As a side note, I anticipate that the badlands is located under the Lands Between.

Lands Between

Here, let’s think about the lion on Godfrey’s back.

The name of this lion is Serosh.

Godfery transformed into Hoarah Loux after killing Serosh

That will be all.
Thou didst me good service, Serosh.
I’ve given thee courtesy enough.
Now I fight as Hoarah Loux!

You might wonder why he killed Serosh and transformed into Hoarah Loux.

The answer is in the text of Godfrey Icon.

Godfrey Icon
Godfrey was a ferocious warrior. When he vowed to become a lord, he took the Beast Regent Serosh upon on his back to suppress the ceaseless lust for battle that raged within.

The text above indicates Serosh played the role to suppress the Godfrey’s lust for battle.

So, killing Serosh lifted the limiter on the Godfrey’s lust, resulting in transforming into the warrior Hoarah Loux.

Hoarah Loux in the Opening Movie

Here, let’s think about the Hoarah Loux in the opening movie.

In this movie, we can see Hoarah Loux like being impaled to death.

This Hoarah Loux would have died in the badlands.

Therefore, the Hoarah Loux that players fight in the Lands Between would be the incarnation of his soul dead in badlands.

In the Golden Order, the record of Erdtree gives the eternality of lives.

Golden Order

The appearance of translucent Godfrey near the Erdtree implies that his soul dead in badlands returned to the Lands Between.

So, Hoarah Loux would have died in badlands and returned to the Lands Between in order to become the Elden Lord again.
