Lore of Fia Explained [ELDEN RING]

Fia ELDEN RING

One of the core characters in the story of ELDEN RING is Fia, Deathbed Companion.

Fia is said to have a ability to revive the dead.

In this article, a native Japanese writer explained the lore of Fia, Deathbed Companion including Japanese backgrounds.

Ability

Fia’s most distinctive feature is her ability to revive the dead.

Fia talks about her ability like following:

Fia
I was known as a Deathbed Companion, where I come from. Afer I recieved the warmth and lifely vigour from a number of champions,
I lay with the remains of an exalted noble, to grant him another chance at life. To do so is the purpose of me being.
But before I could bear the noble into new life, I was awakened by the guidance of grace, and chased from my birthplace.

The Japanese translation of Deathbed Companion is 死衾.

死衾 is coined word, and the kanji means sleeping with the dead.

The dialogue, “I lay with the remains of an exalted noble, to grant him another chance at life”, suggests that Fia can bring the dead back to life by sleeping with them.

In addition, Fia needs to recieve the warmth and lifely vigour from a number of champions in order to bring the dead back to life.

In summary, Fia can store the warmths of champions and use it to bring the dead back to life.

Purpose

The purpose of Fia is to revive Godwyn, as Fia says below:

Fia
This is goodbye, my dear.
But I am satisfied.
I choose to lie with Godwyn of my own will. Not the remains of one chosen for me.
And I will bear a child.
Who will inherit your warmth, too.
What greater blessing could there be, but to be born a Deathbed Companion?

The dialogue, “I choose to lie with Godwyn of my own will”, suggests that Fia’s purpose is to revive Godwyn.

The dialogue below would be the key of Fia’s purpose.

Fia
Hark, Roundtable. Disturb not the Death of Godwyn, the exalted. We, who humbly live in Death…Live in waiting, to one day welcome our Lord. What right does anyone have to object? Our Lord will rise. The Lord of the many, and the meek.

Earlier, Fia said, “I lay with the remains of an exalted noble”.

And, from the dialogue above, “an exalted noble” must indicate Godwyn.

In summary, Fia’s purpose has been to bring Godwyn back to life, even before she was reconvened in the Lands Between.

The Night of the Black Knives

On the Night of the Black Knives, Marika plotted to kill Godwyn, but it all makes sense if Marika planned to use Fia to revive him.

the Night of the Black Knives

One of the reasons why Marika shattered the Elden Ring would be to obtain the Mending Rune of the Death-Prince and return the Death into the Golden Order.

Mending Rune of the Death-Prince
Formed of the two hallowbrand half-wheels combined, it will embed the principle of life within Death into Order.
The Golden Order was created by confining Destined Death. Thus, this new Order will be one of Death restored.

The reasons why Marika shattered the Elden Ring is explained in this article.

Also, Fia wanted to return the Death into the Golden Order, just like Marika.

Fia
I will soon lay with Godwyn.
And it will surely stir within me.
the new life of the golden prince, and first Dead of the demigods,
as the rune of Those Who Live in Death.
Please, do one thing for me.
Brandish this child, my rune, and take for yourself the throne.
Stay the persecution of Those Who Live in Death.
By becoming our Elden Lord.

Actually, if you hear Fia’s dialogues above, the ending of ELDEN RING changes and the Destined Death would be returned.

Rturning Death into the Order

However, why does Fia want to return the Death into the Order?

This would be because Fia has been trying to collect Godwyn’s mind and revive him by using the souls of heros.

soul, mind, and body

First, it can be inferred that Fia’s ability is to recover the soul and the mind.

Fia
Great champion, would you allow me to hold you, but briefly?
Perhaps you might share with me some of your lifely vigour, and your stout-heartedness.
Doing so will grant me the warmth of a champion. And you, I am sure, will bear a baldachin’s blessing.
Do you think it vulgar, perhaps? Where I come from, it is a sacred act.

In Japanese version, “stout-heartedness” is translated into 意志 (mind).

And, Fia was trying to revive Godwyn from the main characters’ warmth, power to live.

Fia
And I will bear a child.
Who will inherit your warmth, too.
What greater blessing could there be, but to be born a Deathbed Companion?

Fia
I will soon lay with Godwyn.
And it will surely stir within me.
the new life of the golden prince, and first Dead of the demigods,
as the rune of Those Who Live in Death.

In summary, Fia tried to bring Godwyn back to life by using his mind and the heros’ souls.

However, since the Golden Order does not allow separation of the body and the mind, Fia would have been unable to retrieve Godwyn’s mind.

Golden Order

Therefore, Fia is thought to return the Death into the Golden Order.

Mending Rune of the Death-Prince
Formed of the two hallowbrand half-wheels combined, it will embed the principle of life within Death into Order.
The Golden Order was created by confining Destined Death. Thus, this new Order will be one of Death restored.

Those are the reasons why Fia wants to return the Death into the Golden Order.

The Last Moment

Fia’s end is murder by D.

D

The reason why Fia was killed by D is because her idea conflicts with the Golden Order.

The concept of death does not originally exist in the Golden Order, so it is a deadly sin to incorporate the death into the Golden Order.

In fact, Marika was also crucified in the Erdtree because of this deadly sin.

So, Fia, who committed this deadly sin, ended up being murdered by D a fanatic of the Golden Order.
